
Keeping Things Warm (Without the Blinding Light)
When you’re using an infrared heater in the bathroom, you want that instant hit of warmth. That’s where short-wave and medium-wave radiation come in—they do the job fast. But there’s a catch. The same filament that makes you feel cozy also pumps out visible light and UV rays. If you’ve got a baby in the house, this is a big deal. Infants have eyes that aren’t fully developed yet, and that intense glare can be way too much for them.
How we fix the glare
We don’t just leave you with a raw quartz tube. Instead, we use special coatings or doped glass that act as a sort of gatekeeper. Think of it as a filter. It lets the heat (the long-wave stuff) slide right through, but it blocks the harsh blue light and UV rays. The goal is to move the “peak” of the light so you get the warmth without that blinding, white-hot glow you see in industrial warehouses. It’s much easier on the eyes.
The trade-off
To keep things from feeling “stabby” or creating hot spots, we add frosted reflectors or diffused lenses. This spreads the heat out evenly. You still get the same total wattage, but it feels softer and more natural. Now, here is the honest part: filters aren’t free. You lose a little bit of efficiency. A filtered lamp won’t be quite as raw as an uncoated tube—you’re trading maybe 5% to 10% of the heat for a lot more safety. To me, that’s a trade worth making every single time.
A few tips for the install
When you’re wiring these up, try to keep your voltage stable. If the power spikes, the filament gets too hot, and that can actually push visible light right through the protection coating. And please, keep the lenses clean. Dust isn’t just ugly; it creates uneven heat. If one spot gets too hot while the rest is cool, you risk cracking the quartz. A quick wipe-down every now and then keeps everything running smooth.
