Nobody wants to step out of a shower and feel like they’re staring directly into the sun. It’s a common problem with infrared heaters—they get you warm fast, but that blinding white light can be a real shock to the system. It’s especially tough on kids or babies who can’t just look away. So, we had to figure out a way to keep the warmth without the eye strain.
Making the Light Less Aggressive
Standard lamps are basically light cannons. To fix that, we don’t just “dim” the bulb—that would kill the heat. Instead, we use special coatings and doped quartz glass. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. These materials filter out the harsh, high-energy visible light and the glare that hurts your eyes. By shifting the energy toward the mid-infrared range, the lamp sends the heat straight to your skin, but leaves your eyes alone. You get that cozy, radiating warmth without the blinding flash.
The Nitty-Gritty Hardware
Heat is brutal on materials. If you use cheap glass, the coatings will just peel or burn off. That’s why we stick with high-purity quartz tubes. They can take the heat. We also use polished aluminum reflectors. These act like a mirror, pushing all those infrared rays straight down to the floor so you actually feel the warmth where you’re standing. One thing we have to be careful about is the “heat soak.” If you cram a high-wattage lamp into a tiny bathroom fixture, you risk melting the ceiling housing. To stop that from happening, we use heat-resistant polymers that won’t warp or sag when things get hot.
The Trade-offs
Here’s the honest part: adding those protective coatings does take away a little bit of the raw heat—maybe 5% to 10%. It’s a small price to pay for not blinding your guests. To make up for that loss, we just tweak the filament length or bump up the voltage. It keeps the room just as toasty as it would be with a clear tube. One quick tip if you’re installing these: put them on their own dedicated circuit. It prevents those annoying voltage drops that make the lamps flicker.
