
Keeping Your Outdoor Heaters Alive in the Rain
Outdoor infrared heaters have a tough life. They’re basically in a constant fight with moisture, and if you aren’t careful, a little bit of rain or dust can kill a heating element pretty quickly. That’s why we build our units with an IP55 rating.
What IP55 actually means for you
You’ll see “IP55” on the spec sheet, but in plain English, it just means the heater can handle dust and low-pressure water jets without freaking out. When you’re hanging out on a patio, “splash-proof” isn’t just about a sudden rainstorm. It’s the wind-blown mist and that annoying condensation that creeps in everywhere. We use reinforced housing and tight gaskets to keep water far away from the electrical terminals. It’s the only way to stop short circuits and keep the wiring from rotting away.
The battle against fog
Here’s the tricky part: fog. When warm air hits a cold surface, you get those tiny droplets that love to seep into the lamp housing. If a cold drop of water hits a scorching hot infrared element, the glass can literally crack from the thermal shock. To stop that, we added special drainage paths and coatings that push moisture away from the quartz tube. It keeps the electronics dry and the glass intact.
The trade-off
Now, there is a catch. When you seal something this tight to keep water out, you also trap heat inside. Because the chassis isn’t wide open, the internal parts run a bit hotter than they would in a cheap, open-air unit. This is why you can’t just slap these against a ceiling. You need to give them some breathing room. If they’re tucked too close to a roof, that trapped heat will eat through your capacitors and wiring way faster than it should.
Why it matters in the long run
It sounds like a lot of technical fuss, but it comes down to one thing:reliability. By blocking out the dust and the grime, we stop that conductive gunk from building up on the terminals. The electricity flows smooth, the heat stays steady, and you don’t end up with a dead heater halfway through winter. It’s a simple mechanical fix, but it makes a world of difference.
