
Why we put our bathroom lamps through the “steam torture test”
Bathrooms are honestly brutal on heating elements. One minute it’s bone-dry, and the next, you’ve got a thick cloud of steam filling the room. It’s a nightmare for electronics. We don’t just build these lamps and hope for the best. We put them through “damp-heat aging”—which is basically a fancy way of saying we try our hardest to break them before they ever leave our warehouse. We want to make sure they don’t just quit the second someone takes a long, hot shower. The battle against steam Here’s the thing about moisture: it’s sneaky. Steam doesn’t just sit on the glass; it hunts for any tiny, microscopic gap in the seals. If a seal isn’t perfect, moisture sneaks in and hits the hot quartz or the electrical contacts. That’s usually when things go wrong. You get oxidation, or worse, the lamp just “pops” because of the thermal shock. We use high-humidity chambers to find those leaks early. It’s better we find the flaw now than your customer finding it in their bathroom. Watching the wires Then there’s the electrical side. Humidity loves to eat away at metal—what the engineers call galvanic corrosion. If the contact points start to pit or rust, the resistance goes up. And when resistance climbs, those terminals get way hotter than they should. If we aren’t careful, that heat can actually melt the surrounding plastic or trip a breaker. That’s why we run these lamps for over 500 hours in the damp. We’re looking for stability. We want to know that the power is flowing smoothly, even after weeks of being soaked in steam. The balancing act Now, you might think, “Just seal it airtight and call it a day.” But there’s a catch. If we make the casing too airtight, the lamp can’t breathe. It traps the heat inside and basically cooks itself, which kills the lifespan of the filament. It’s a bit of a tug-of-war. We need it dry, but we also need it cool. Our aging tests help us find that sweet spot. You get a lamp that can handle a steamy bathroom without sacrificing how long it actually lasts.
